The term "CNC turned" describes components that have been manufactured primarily on a CNC lathe or turning center through a process known as turning. In this subtractive manufacturing process, the workpiece is rotated at high speed (a function of the spindle), while a stationary, single-point cutting tool is fed into it to remove material and create a cylindrical form. The primary axes of movement on a basic lathe are X (radial movement, controlling the diameter) and Z (axial movement, controlling the length). "CNC turned" parts are typically rotationally symmetric and include a vast range of common components such as shafts, pins, bushings, bolts, nozzles, and connectors. The process excels at producing these shapes with excellent concentricity, high-quality surface finishes, and at a very high production rate, especially for large volumes. The sophistication of "CNC turned" parts has grown with the advent of multi-axis turning centers. These advanced machines incorporate "live tooling" – powered rotary tools mounted on the turret that can perform milling, drilling, and tapping operations off-center. When combined with a second, opposing spindle (sub-spindle), the part can be automatically transferred to machine its back side in the same cycle, enabling complete "done-in-one" machining of highly complex parts. Therefore, "CNC turned" now often implies that turning was the primary process, but it may be complemented by secondary milling operations, all performed on a single, sophisticated turning center, resulting in a complete and precise component ready for use.
