Mengji CNC Pro: Specialists in Horizontal Turning Center Operations

The horizontal turning center at Mengji CNC Pro is a key asset for high-volume production of precision rotational parts. This technology works in concert with our vmc machine fleet to provide a complete manufacturing ecosystem. It is instrumental in producing car engine components like crankshafts and hubs, and also contributes to our precision mold services by machining large, round mold components. As a versatile precision machining parts manufacturer, we use this turning center alongside various types of vmc machine to fabricate durable precision dies moulds and all necessary precision moulds and components with exceptional efficiency.

Advantages of the product

Multi Side Machining & Reduced Setup Time

HMCs enable multi side machining of workpieces in a single setup: the rotary table (with high positioning accuracy ±0.002mm) rotates the workpiece to allow machining of all sides (front, back, sides) without re clamping. This reduces setup time by 50 70% compared to vertical machining centers, minimizing human error and improving batch consistency. For example, an automotive cylinder head can be machined (milling, drilling, tapping) in one setup, reducing production time from 2 hours to 1 hour per part.

A horizontal turning center, fundamentally a CNC lathe with a horizontally oriented spindle, is the cornerstone of modern high-volume production for rotational parts. Its design is optimized for stability, chip management, and automation. The horizontal configuration means the workpiece is held in a chuck that rotates around a horizontal axis, while the cutting tools, mounted on a turret, move in the X (radial) and Z (axial) directions to perform turning, facing, boring, and grooving operations. The primary advantage of this orientation is superior chip evacuation. Gravity naturally pulls chips away from the workpiece and cutting zone down into a conveyor or chip pan, preventing chips from recutting, which can damage the workpiece surface and shorten tool life. This is crucial for untended, lights-out manufacturing. Modern horizontal turning centers are often equipped with a subspindle, or second main spindle, located opposite the primary spindle. This allows for the complete machining of a part's back side in the same cycle—the main spindle completes the front-side operations, then the part is automatically transferred to the subspindle for machining the reverse side, all without operator intervention. This "done-in-one" capability is a massive productivity booster. Furthermore, these centers frequently feature live tooling, where powered tools mounted on the turret can perform milling, drilling, and tapping operations off-center, blurring the line between a lathe and a machining center. When combined with a Y-axis, which provides off-center milling capability, and a C-axis for precise spindle positioning, the machine becomes a highly versatile multi-tasking turn-mill center. The inherent rigidity of the horizontal structure also allows for heavy-duty cutting on large-diameter workpieces. For these reasons, horizontal turning centers are the preferred choice for the mass production of shafts, fittings, flanges, and other cylindrical components in industries like automotive, aerospace, and fluid power.

customer evaluation

Andrew Lee

We compared many brands before purchasing a horizontal machining center, and finally chose Mengji because of its durability. The machine’s cast iron bed has good rigidity and vibration resistance, which ensures stable processing accuracy even under heavy load. After 3 years of use, the machine’s processing accuracy is still within the range required by our products. Mengji’s team provides a 5 year warranty for key components, which gives us confidence in the machine’s long term use. This investment has brought stable returns to our company.

Ideal for Cubic and Box-Type Parts

Ideal for Cubic and Box-Type Parts

HMCs are the perfect solution for machining cube-shaped parts like gearboxes pump housings valve bodies and engine blocks. The multi-sided access in one setup makes them significantly more efficient than vertical centers for these types of components.
Enhanced Rigidity for Heavy Cutting

Enhanced Rigidity for Heavy Cutting

The horizontal spindle design provides tremendous support and rigidity allowing for very heavy cuts with large tools. This results in higher metal removal rates and the ability to machine tough materials more efficiently reducing overall cycle times.
Reduced Tooling and Fixturing Costs

Reduced Tooling and Fixturing Costs

The ability to machine multiple sides in one setup often means that simpler and less expensive fixtures are required. This can lead to significant cost savings on tooling especially for complex parts that would otherwise need multiple specialized fixtures.
